Left Coast Crime Lifetime Achievement Award: J.A. Jance

Left Coast Crime is delighted to be presenting J.A. Jance with our Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 convention.

J.A. Jance always wanted to be a writer, but circumstances conspired to prevent her from living that dream for a very long time. Finally at age thirty-eight, as a single mom with two young children, she sat down to write her first book — one which, due to the fact that it was 1400 pages long, was never published. On the advice of her agent, she tried again. The result of that effort was Until Proven Guilty, the first Detective Beaumont book, which was published in 1985. Since then she’s published more than sixty books in four separate series with two new ones due to be published in 2023.

Although born in South Dakota, her family moved to southern Arizona when she was four. After being raised in Bisbee, she attended the University of Arizona where she received a BA in Secondary Education and an M.Ed. in Library Science. She taught high school English in Tucson for two years and then spent five years as a K-12 librarian at Tohono O’odham west of Tucson.

After being snowbirds for two decades with homes in both Tucson and Seattle, she and her husband now make their home in the Seattle area.  Nonetheless, in her heart, Arizona is still home.
